FIRE DISTRICT BUDGET COMMITTEE TO MEET MAY 19

The budget committee of Wallowa Lake Rural Fire Protection District will meet to formulate the 2014-15 district budget at 6 p.m. Monday, May 19, at the Glacier Grill at Wallowa Lake. The meeting will be followed by the district Board of Directors' budget hearing at which the budget is expected to be adopted.

The district seeks citizens living or owning property in the district to be members of the budget committee. For information, contact district budget officer David Hurley, bdavidhurley@gmail.com.

DIRECTORS EXTEND SEARCH TO FILL BOARD VACANCY

The Wallowa Lake Rural Fire Protection District invites letters of application from district residents and/or district property owners interested in serving on the district Board of Directors. The five-member board governs the district, which provides fire protection and rescue services through a contract with the City of Joseph and its volunteer fire department.

Letters should state why the applicant is interested in serving and outline his or her qualifications. Firefighting experience is not necessary. Mail letters to Wallowa Lake Rural Fire Protection District, P.O. Box 922, Joseph, OR 97846. Letters must be received by Friday, May 16. The board will review the letters and may make an appointment at its public meeting Monday, May 19.

JOSEPH, ENTERPRISE FIRE DEPARTMENTS DOUSE WILDFIRE

Fire burns in brush and trees
Volunteer firefighters from Joseph and Enterprise responded to a wildland fire between the cities at the Enterprise watershed off Dorrance Lane Saturday afternoon, April 19. 

Quick response by both agencies kept the fire from spreading from some grass, brush and trees along tracks of the Wallowa Union Railroad.

The cause of the blaze is undetermined.

JOSEPH FIRE MAKES SURE UNCONTROLLED BURN IS OUT

Joseph firefighters responded to a report of an escaped "controlled burn" Saturday afternoon, April 12, on Highway 82 north of the city limits.

Firefighter Tom Clevenger was first on the scene with Water Tender 31, which he used to douse charred grass and drown what remained of the fire.

Whipped by moderate winds, the fire had moved onto neighboring property, prompting residents to call 9-1-1.
