Firefighting helicopters arrived at Joseph State Airport Wednesday, Aug. 22, to be assigned to the Cache Creek wildfire burning at the extreme northeastern corner of Wallowa County and into Asotin County, Wash.

Later in the day, heavy-lift copters able to drop water from large buckets started operating from the airport as did lighter copters used for reconnaissance and delivery of rappelling firefighters.

Also available to fire commanders are large fixed-wing airtankers that would fly in from La Grande and Boise, Idaho.

The helibase is a short distance from the base camp and incident command headquarters set up at the Joseph Rodeo Grounds.
